VG is seeking an Avionics and Electrical Systems Engineer (Ground Systems) to work on both virtual and hands-on integration, design, test and operations tasks. The primary focus of the Ground Systems engineers will be in support of our vehicle simulator, our Mission Control Centers, radio and IP-based communication systems, data storage/archival/retrieval solutions and more. Other functions are to develop, document, test, and troubleshoot electrical equipment. This position ensures there is strong compliance between the vehicle(s) flight performance and the simulator, that standards are met, and verifies that Mission Control Center console positions, software, communications and telemetry are implemented and functional for commercial operations and missions. This role works closely with Vehicle Electrical Systems engineers and other VG engineering and IT teammates to accomplish inter-disciplinary projects.

You should be well versed in: Aircraft avionics and controls, instrumentation hardware, signal conditioning, data acquisition, actuator control, and wire harnesses. The position relies on an operational knowledge in many related fields like RF theory, control systems, communication theory, computer hardware and software, networking technologies, and general systems integration.

  • System integration for electrical equipment in aircraft/spacecraft systems model and aircraft/spacecraft propulsion system models, including interfaces to aircraft avionics hardware/software

  • Integration of software utilities and maintenance documentation for simulator integration support and software interfaces to simulator subsystems (visual, control loading, audio/sound, etc.).

  • Corrects program errors, prepares operating instructions, compiles documentation of program development, and analyzes system capabilities to resolve questions of program intent, output requirements, input data acquisition, programming techniques, and controls.

  • Prepare ground test plans and flight test plans for electrical equipment evaluation.

  • Coordinate with TSC counterpart engineers on requirements development, hardware/software design, and verification and validation activities.

  • Partner with TSC counterpart to develop solutions to address hardware and/or software obsolescence.

  • Responsible for the technical performance of the ground support equipment/instrumentation system for telemetry, mission control center and simulator

  • Coordinate and/or integrate with counterpart TSC designers on modifications and/or design change proposals for assigned systems.

  • Review and propose concepts for redesign recommendations based on operational experience, reliability, maintainability, etc. on assigned systems.

  • Review and approve technical publications. Propose modifications where appropriate. Includes:

  • Review and approve repair manuals. May author portions as appropriate.

  • Approve and/or review disposition for component removals and replacements.

  • Author and/or approve troubleshooting dispositions.

  • Author and/or approve Work Instructions/Engineering Reports.

  • Develop and remain technical authority for assigned Flight Rules Commit Criteria, and Required Equipment List (REL) items, and how they interact for assigned systems.

  • Perform post flight data analysis function, including continued development of system health monitoring and reliability data for more established systems

  • Perform analysis of tear down and failure reports for failed vendor components (if available)

  • Communicate reliability data/recommendations back to TSC designers.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Data Systems, or similar discipline

  • 5+ years of relevant electrical engineering experience on aircraft and/or spacecraft ground systems

  • Working knowledge of navigation systems simulation, including ground stations simulation databases and satellite based systems

  • Working knowledge of aircraft systems and/or propulsion modelling

  • Must possess considerable experience developing mission-critical hardware and software

  • Skill applying embedded software programming to avionics/instrumentation on vehicles and simulators.

  • Must have the ability to trouble shoot electro-mechanical and instrumentation systems including fault tree analysis

  • Prior control room test experience is highly desired

  • Experience with DO-178 and DO-254 is a plus

  • Must understand the systems engineering process

  • Excellent organizational skills and problem-solving skills

  • Strong Microsoft office skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Visio

  • Must be a “U.S. person” as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15)
